Looking for Beta Testers - Desktop Version for THREE

  • Hi All,

    Some exciting news today.

We've been working on one of the biggest requests from the community: a desktop version of the software for the Matter and Form THREE.

This took a major overhaul of our scanning library so it could be compiled and run on Windows. The app itself is an Electron wrapper around our frontend (a glorified browser, really), but the actual scan processing now happens on your desktop or laptop. Building it this way means the desktop app doesn't drift from the software running on the THREE, and new features are pushed to both.

Right now we support Windows and Linux. If you absolutely need Mac, let us know, it helps us plan.

    Some of the features:

      - Sync your projects to or from the scanner, so you can keep working however you prefer.
      - No scanner needed. The desktop app only requires the scanner to, well, actually scan. Everything else runs on your
      machine.
      - New APIs for connectivity, project syncing, and status.

And the part you actually want to know: How does it perform?

In our tests, scans finish about 47% faster. Low and high quality captures now take nearly the same time. Meshing, texturing, and aligning run as fast as your machine can handle. The one thing that can't move off the scanner is capturing the images themselves, so that's now the majority of the time in a scan. Honestly, this is my preferred way to scan now.

That said, there are still a few bugs, and we want to test this properly with real people before releasing it to the world.

If you're interested in being a beta tester, willing to push the software to its limits and report bugs, email us at info at matterandform.net with the subject line "THREE Desktop Beta Tester". Include the system you plan to test on: OS, CPU, RAM, and GPU.
