Struggling with Merge results

  • My intended use case for the scanner has always been to be able to pull the scanned data in SolidWorks (with whatever post-processing is required between export and import), and use those as references for whatever but I've not once been able to successfully import anything into SW (granted it's 2017 and not great at dealing with anything other than native or STEP files).

However lately I'm struggling to even get a useful merge exported.

Here is my scan of the cupholder assembly from the QX80. Scan

It's comprised of...many scans but they're happily aligned and have captured the information I need. When I select the Merge button, the render is as expected.

    merge

However the merged file is, I think, useless.

    what

If I zoom in enough, the "interior" is just like the 2nd image, but how on earth do I make this a usable file?

  • Hi Andrew,

The Merge screen meshing step closes all holes on the scan. The bottom of that scan, under the cup holders, is devoid of points and so the mesh process just covers it over, creating this bump.

For your use case, the thing to do is to not use the Merge screen at all, but to instead export the scan as a PLY or STL or XYZ from the Scans screen. Just go into the menu (three horizontal lines top left of the screen). That will export the scan as-is, without further meshing or processing. It's the "raw" scan, which is what the workflow you're describing usually uses.
