Scanning 2 sided objects

  • I'va been having a hard time scanning round objects that have both an concave and convex surface.

I did 2 scans, one of the inside and one of the outside. Knowing they wouldn't align properly for lack of common areas, i did a 3rd up right scan of the object to serve as a reference frame, scanning both inside and outside in the same scan.
Even then, i had a very hard time properly aligning everything, even manually.
The idea was to align the outside scan to the reference scan, then the inside and ditch the reference scan. I and lots of miss alignement issues, result ing in wrong proportions, sometimes, both sides would overlap in certain areas only.

Think about scanning a frying pan or cooking pot, not just a surface.

I know this is a common issue on all scanning devices in existance, maybe something can be done to make the process easier when aligning the scans prior to meshing. Just my 2 cents.

  • One of the things I've been doing is to place small 3D points (using something like Blutack) around objects if I can't fully capture their curvature or with larger surfaces. With enough unique points, I'm finding alignment to be much more successful.
