Getting Started: Scanning Rings with THREE

  • Hi everyone! I received my THREE just yesterday and I’m already loving it—huge thanks to the team for shipping such an excellent product in a great case.

I’m working with symmetrical rings and aiming to capture clean geometry for later texturing. I’d really appreciate any tips, tricks, or workflow advice you’ve found helpful when scanning jewelry—especially rings.

My knowledge is limited for now, but my gratitude to this community and for the scanner is already immense. Looking forward to learning from you all!

    Hi Vik,

Welcome to the community and congrats on your THREE scanner =)

While I don't have specific experience scanning jewelry. I've found a helpful technique when working with symmetrical objects like rings: place artifact objects around the piece you're scanning. These could be small distinctive items, textured blocks, or even just marked pieces of paper positioned around the ring. These artifacts serve as reference points that make it much easier to align individual scans.

  • Hi Vaclav,

Thanks so much for the welcome and for sharing that tip—really appreciate it!

I hadn’t considered using external artifacts to assist with alignment, but that makes a lot of sense. I’ll definitely experiment with placing some textured markers or distinct objects around the ring during my next scan session.

If you’ve ever tried this with reflective surfaces? I’d love to hear how you handled those challenges too. Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

    Cheers,

    Vik

  • Echoing what Vaclav said, when I scan something small and symmetrical, I will often put it on top of a small box, something that has a large width x length so that it sticks out around the object, but with a small height.

  • Hi Trevor,

Thanks so much for the insight—and for being part of the team behind this amazing scanner!

Your suggestion about using a wide, low-height base is super practical. I can see how that would give the software more visual anchors without interfering with the scan itself. I’ll definitely try that setup with my next ring scan.

Since you’re with Matter and Form, I’d love to know if there are any materials or surface finishes you recommend for those base objects—especially when scanning reflective jewelry. I’m still learning the ropes, so any guidance on minimizing scan noise or improving alignment would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks again for the support and for helping us get the most out of the THREE!
