Rough Start

  • Just got my new "three" and have had a bit of a bumpy start..

    1.  When attempting to join my scanner to the network, no password box would pop up after selecting the network and hitting continue.

This happened using Microsoft edge on a windows laptop as well as using safari on an iPhone.  I got around this by selecting my network inside the UI beyond the quick start setup.

    2. Using the turn table, it seems like the default size is limited to the area of the turn table. Why??

I have an object that fits on the turntable and is able to be moved easily, but the scanner only captures the parts of the model directly on the table.  What makes this even more frustrating is I thought then I'd be able to simply scan each half on the table with the opposite half hanging off, but the mesh won't work in this situation.. it tries to combine both sets of scans into the same area overlaying each other seemingly no matter what I do when the turntable is in use.

    3. Auto align is having major issues doing independent scans.  I've tried for the better part of six hours attempting to scan a simple item (the frame for a bmw grill) but always have issues with the overlay, or when I go to create a mesh it makes one large piece and fills everything in..

this piece is normally a reflective chrome so I tried with sublimating spray - this at least let me scan it but I can't get to the point of outputting anything useable..  I just spray painted the entire thing primer gray and will try again, hoping for some better results on something that should be very simple.  This hasn't presented a challenge on much lesser scanners I've used previously.

Any advice or words of wisdom??

    Thanks!

  • Hi Seth,

Question 1 will have to be investigated by the Dev team. I've not heard of this bug and I'll try to recreate it later, but obviously we believe your experience. I imagine most of us used Chrome for network setup so perhaps that's why it hasn't been noticed.

IIRC, for Question 2, there should be an advanced setting that lets the scanner ignore the boundaries of the turntable. I belive it's called radius clipping.
What you're describing with the two halves of the scan appearing in the same space in the viewer is "correct" - in order to get them to connect you'll need to align the two groups of scans (and make sure there's enough overlap in the two halves for the software to know how they fit). However you can probably avoid this by adjusting the radius clipping and simply getting the entire object in one set of turntable scans.

For question 3, it'd be very helpful to see a picture, but my suspicion is that this grill is highly symmetrical and has a lot of similar/identical areas that will confuse the auto-alignment. You have a few options here - you can manually align using point-picking or you can add some additional geometry to help the autoalignment choose correctly.

The grill is also going to not mesh well if you've failed to capture the inner edges of the grill, as the scanner cannot differentiate a missing area from intentional negative space; the mesh will try to fill in the blanks if you don't seal off the edges. Again, there are a few solutions here - the first would be to capture more of the object, particularly interior areas; if that's not possible, you may need to export the point clouds and use a more full-featured meshing program that doesn't prioritize watertight meshing.

  • @Alex Berezowsky thanks for the quick reply!  I'm able to get a good mesh of the front of the grill piece, but when I try to join the back it ends up being the wrong size and/or the is slightly off when attempting to join.  You can see here how a clip piece appears and then when I add the new image it's off by maybe 1-2cm (the clip).

I disassembled the grill and was trying to do just the face and was having problems getting to the back due to not having enough matching points..  I'll grab a pic of the piece once the primer is dry.

The setting you mentioned may very well be a perfect fix, though!  I'll try in not too long.

  • Hey Seth, regarding your alignment issues - the latest version (frontend 11.6; backend 11.3) of the software has some major improvements for alignment, so please make sure you've updated. Go into the menu, then choose "Check for Updates".
