Question when creating mesh?

  • Good morning.  Things are going a bit better, and I'm able to get some scans that look really good -- but when I go to mesh them, everything blows up pretty badly.

I've included some pics of the scans, then some pics of everything after they're merged (still looks good at this point).  But as soon as I choose to mesh at any quality, I get large blobs around the perimeters of my scan, and a large page behind my scan that's seemingly unrelated.

    Any input would help.  Thanks!

  • Hi Seth,

The large page in the background is caused by some extra 3D points floating around out there. Clean those away from the scans by zooming out from your scan a bit, and using the selection tool to select everything around the scan. Then delete. If only takes a few errant points to create a result like that. The other option is, after you've meshed, add the meshed scan to the project, then select the big page thing and delete it.

Regarding the blobs around the perimiter of your scan, those appear due to a lack of data. The mesh process in the merge screen automatically closes / hole fills / makes watertight the point cloud. What's happening in those areas is there is either no point cloud data, or very little, and the mesh is just filling it over in an estimate, which is of course not the actual geometry.

To resolve this you have two options. One, you can scan the missing areas and align them in, to complete the scan of the whole object, and then use the merge mesh process. Or, two, you can just export the scans (the export option in the menu) from the Scans screen and skip the merge mesh process altogether. This second option uses a basic mesh on the point clouds which is not watertight, and therefore doesn't close holes. This option is useful for when you need the geometry for later work in CAD.
